Chapter Eleven
Meg sat on the exam table with her legs extended before her. Her mother waited in a chair. The doctor would be in soon with the results of her X-rays.
“I hope it’s healing well,” Meg murmured. “I can’t wait to get this cast off. I want to be able to sleep upstairs again.”
“You can sleep upstairs if you want. You’ve learned to use the crutches. It may be slow going up the steps, but I’m sure you’ll manage.”
“Ja, I suppose I could.” But the thought of trying to maneuver up the stairs on crutches didn’t sit well with her. She could hop on one foot all the way to the top landing, but what if she fell? Then she would be in worse shape than she was now.
The doorknob rattled, and the orthopedist the hospital had recommended entered the room. He was nice enough, but Meg didn’t want to see him. She wanted to get over her leg injury and get back to her chores and her life.
“Well, Meg, I have your films,” Dr. Reckling said. The man was middle-aged and wore a white lab coat over a white shirt and dark slacks. He slipped the X-ray films into the clip on the light. He flipped a switch, then gestured toward an area on her X-ray. “This is where you fractured the bone. It was a simple stress fracture, which is good. Do you see this?” He used his finger to outline a certain section. “It looks good. You’re healing well, and because of this, I’m going to take off the cast and give you a brace instead.” He turned to regard her with serious brown eyes. “You’ll be able to take off the brace to shower, or to put up your leg for a short time, but, Meg, it’s important that you wear it as much as possible. Do you understand?”
Meg was elated. She was getting the cast off! The fact that she’d have to wear a brace didn’t bother her in the least. If she could shower without it, she was happy. “I understand,” she said. “Will I be able to climb stairs in it?”
“You can if you’re careful. You’ll find the brace easier to get around on than this cast with crutches.” His smile reached his eyes. “I’m sure you’re sick and tired of those, aren’t you?”
Meg nodded. “I’m eager to get rid of them.”
“Let’s do it now then.” He reached into a cabinet and withdrew a small circular saw. Meg’s eyes widened, and he laughed. “It won’t hurt you. See?” He turned on the saw, then held it to his hand. “It vibrates and will cut the blue cast, but not the gauze underneath or your skin.” He switched off the blade. “Are you ready?”
“I’m ready.”

Less than half an hour later Meg and her mother were heading home. “How does it feel?” Mam asked.
“Different.” In a way the boot seemed more cumbersome than the cast, but Meg figured it was just because she had to get used to it.
